Happy Father's Day!

Who came up with the idea for Father's Day? Was it a president? Some European emperor? No. The answer is Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by William Jackson Smart after their mother died. He was Sonora's inspiration, she went to churches, small businesses, and government officials to try and get support for Father's Day. She was successful too. On July 19, 1910, Washington state celebrated the first state wide celebration of Father's Day!

Purrrrrrr, Internet Cats = Healthy?

Have you ever watched internet cats? If so, good for you! A new study shows that they may boost your energy level and heighten your positive emotions. You may think that watching internet cats isn't a serious enough topic for experienced scientists to be studying, but they are one of the most popular uses of the internet today. That being said, to understand the effects of the internet better, we must not ignore the cats!
Research shows that many people watch them to procrastinate and put off unfavorable tasks while at school or work. To counter the procrastinating, the emotional payoff of watching these videos may actually make the individual work harder!
So now I have you thinking: more cats = happy = more work done. Right? Well, to confirm that more research is needed. The sample size was 88.4% females so there wasn't a complete representation of the internet. Now, go watch internet cats!

Earth and It's Craters

Summer is finally here!!! I'm free more so I can post more than during the school year!!! Today's Topic: Earth and it's craters!
Acording to the estimates of work published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, there are 350 craters on Earth larger than 250 meters that are still undiscovered.

So far there are only 188 confirmed impact craters. If you think you know where an undiscovered crater is, take a look at this website: http://www.passc.net/EarthImpactDatabase/Criteria.html

Smiley Face IN SPACE!!

In an image recently taken by NASA, is a smiley face. AKA galaxy cluster SDSS J1038+4849. The eyes are bright galaxies and the smile is arcs which are caused by the strong gravitational lensing effect.
The most massive thing in the known universe are galaxy clusters. The strength
of their gravitational pull is enough to warp the spacetime surrounding them. It also allows them to act as a cosmic lens, these can distort and bend the light behind them. Einstein's theory of general relativity can explain the phenomenon.
