Who came up with the idea for Father's Day? Was it a president? Some European emperor? No. The answer is Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by William Jackson Smart after their mother died. He was Sonora's inspiration, she went to churches, small businesses, and government officials to try and get support for Father's Day. She was successful too. On July 19, 1910, Washington state celebrated the first state wide celebration of Father's Day!
